Largo Dr. António de Magalhães is a pleasant space with borders of shrubs, located in the centre of Ponte de Lima, close to Villa Belmira and commemorates the notable jurisconsult and mayor of Ponte de Lima António de Magalhães Barros de Araújo Queiroz, father of councillor António de Magalhães.
António de Magalhães was born in Ponte de Lima on February 12, 1838 and died in Ponte de Lima on December 19, 1888. He was committed to the progress of Ponte de Lima and promoted the opening of streets, roads and the construction of schools. Among his initiatives was the foundation of the "Asylo Dona Maria Pia" (Maria Pia College), an institution intended to support the most disadvantaged.
