Everyone looks at us questioningly when they hear about our plans. They warn us that this hiking trail is no walk in the park. However, we’re not easily discouraged

From the Sugarlands Visitor Center, it’s a 15-minute drive to the starting point of the Chimney Tops Trail. The route goes along a clear and maintained path by a beautiful stream full of small waterfalls. The hike takes us past lovely spots in the greenery and along the banks of wild mountain rivers. Everywhere we hear birds chirping and see squirrels hopping around. Of the 1,500 black bears and two species of venomous snakes that live here, we have, to our relief, seen none.

In an hour and a half, we climb about 400 meters. Sounds easier than it is. Fortunately, at 15°C, it’s on the cool side and we can pick up the pace. The grand finale consists of a gripping and ridiculously steep climb on hands and knees. This is the Angels Landing of the Smoky Mountains, but a bit wider and without a safety chain. A misstep means a fall of several meters.

The Great Smoky Mountains are less iconic than other national parks like Arches and Bryce Canyon. The vegetation isn’t too different from the deciduous forests back home. Still, the Smokies leave a particularly good impression thanks to their vastness and welcoming surroundings. We certainly understand why this place attracts as many as 9 million visitors every year.
