The Kalyan Minaret is also known as "the tower of death" because people sentenced to death used to be thrown from its top. The Kalyan Minaret dates from 1127. The Kalyan minaret was built by Arslan-khan and is the main symbol of sacred Bukhara. It is made of bricks and has a 45.5 meter height. At ground level the diameter is 9 meter, at the top 6 meter. The cilinder is topped by a rotunda with 16 windows. The minaret is linked to the Kaylan mosque by a small bridge. From this point the minaret can be entered and a thin vintage ladder with 105 steps leads to the rotunda.
