Lichtenau es el distrito central de Lichtenau en Renania del Norte-Westfalia, Alemania, y pertenece al distrito de Paderborn. La localidad es sede de la administración municipal. Lichtenau sigue siendo parte de la región de Bürener Land.
Empezando desde el sureste, los distritos de Lichtenau que limitan con la localidad de Lichtenau en el sentido de las agujas del reloj son Kleinenberg, Holtheim, Husen, Ebbinghausen, Grundsteinheim, Asseln y Hakenberg. El límite oriental de la localidad es también el límite urbano de Lichtenau y el límite del distrito contra el distrito de Höxter con la ciudad de Willebadessen.
