La pirámide es parte de un conjunto que consiste en el castillo de Garzau y el parque paisajístico correspondiente. Friedrich Wilhelm Carl Graf von Schmettau comenzó a diseñar el parque en 1779; la pirámide se construyó en 1784 y originalmente podría haber servido como mausoleo para el conde. Sin embargo, vendió la propiedad en 1802. En 1911, el edificio anterior del castillo, la casa señorial de Garzau, se incendió. Mientras se reconstruía el castillo, la pirámide se deterioró. Debido a su aspecto, el edificio fue llamado en el pueblo la "fortaleza de los caballeros". No fue redescubierta hasta 1999. Un año después, se fundó la Asociación de Amigos de la Pirámide y el Parque del Castillo de Garzau e. V., que liberó el edificio y lo restauró en gran medida con recursos propios entre 2000 y 2010. El interior se encuentra hoy en gran parte en su estado original.
