El ayuntamiento se erige en la plaza Stanislas desde el siglo XVIII. Su gran fachada, adornada con las armas de Stanislas y el escudo de la ciudad de Nancy, cierra la antigua plaza real.
Las puertas se abren a un peristilo que conduce a la escalera principal, adornada con una barandilla de hierro forjado de una sola pieza, verdadera obra maestra de Jean Lamour.
La escalera, cuyas paredes están adornadas con frescos de Girardet, conduce al Salón Carré, un salón a la italiana, que precede al Gran Salón.
