En la Edad Media, la ciudad estaba completamente rodeada de murallas. Fueron erigidas por Jean d'Apremont, obispo de Metz, hacia 1256. Las murallas tenían un perímetro de 1670 m y estaban flanqueadas por veintiocho torres. Hoy en día, quedan partes de las murallas en lo alto del Parque de la Libertad, junto con torres y fosos rellenos en las avenidas Poincaré y Clémenceau. Delante de las murallas del Parque de la Libertad hay casas-estela, monumentos funerarios romanos del cementerio de Freiwald (municipio de Troisfontaines).
