Esta franja de roca caliza protege la cuenca intramontana de Iliakastro. La cuenca intramontana de Iliokastro tiene una base plana con suelos profundamente desarrollados. Esos suelos pudieron desarrollarse en mucho material que se depositó en esta cuenca y que no fue erosionado. La cuenca está protegida de los ríos erosivos por un conjunto de bloques de roca caliza. En el momento en que el río atraviesa el bloque de roca caliza, crea cañones profundos, como el cañón entre Fournoi y Ermioni, conocido como el Cañón de Katafiki.
