Questa striscia di calcare protegge il bacino intramontano di Iliakastro. Il bacino intramontano di Iliokastro ha una base piatta con suoli profondamente sviluppati. Questi suoli sono stati in grado di svilupparsi in una grande quantità di materiale che è stato depositato in questo bacino e che non è stato eroso. Il bacino è protetto da fiumi erodenti da un insieme di blocchi di calcare. Nel momento in cui il fiume attraversa il blocco di calcare, crea profonde gole, come la gola tra Fournoi ed Ermioni, nota come il Gola di Katafiki.
