Cette bande de calcaire protège le bassin intramontal d'Iliakastro. Le bassin intramontal d'Iliokastro a un fond plat avec des sols profondément développés. Ces sols ont pu se développer grâce à une grande quantité de matériel déposé dans ce bassin et qui n'a pas été érodé. Le bassin est protégé des rivières érosives par un ensemble de blocs de calcaire. Au moment où la rivière traverse le bloc de calcaire, elle crée de profonds canyons, comme le canyon entre Fournoi et Ermioni, connu sous le nom de Gorge de Katafiki.
