On peut affirmer grâce à des écrits que l'église de Baptresse remonte à l'époque carolingienne.
Cette église a succédé à un temple gallo-romain. On y a découverte en 1835, devant la façade de l’église, un autel gallo-romain à quatre dieux : Mars, Vulcain, Hercule et Mercure, qui est déposé depuis au musée de Poitiers.
Dans le cimetière primitif, situé derrière l’église, on peut observer un petit monument intéressant, une croix hosannière.
Cette charmante petite église sert aujourd'hui de lieu d'exposition.
