Bleskensgraaf ha preso il suo nome da un antico signore terriero, ovvero "Il Signore (Conte) di Blassekijn". Il villaggio si trova lungo il torrente Graafstroom. Come suggerisce il nome, si tratta in realtà di un canale scavato, che si collega al torrente Alblas. Nel villaggio si può vedere come la parte diritta scavata (il Graafstroom) all'altezza della Wijngaardeseweg si trasformi nel fiume tortuoso (l'Alblas), che scorre attraverso Bleskensgraaf, Oud Alblas e Alblasserdam e sfocia quindi nel Mare del Nord.
Bleskensgraaf ha un nucleo rurale relativamente nuovo. Il vecchio nucleo è stato completamente distrutto da un bombardamento nella prima mattina del 12 maggio 1940, quindi all'inizio della Seconda Guerra Mondiale. Edifici antichi quindi si possono quasi non trovare in questo villaggio.
