Nel 1369, nel luogo dell'attuale Grote Kerk in Kerkplein, fu costruita una chiesa di legno e paglia. Dopo la dedicazione nel 1370, la chiesa continuò ad essere costruita e ristrutturata. La prima espansione nel 1405 includeva un coro in pietra. I lavori sulle due navate laterali iniziarono nel 1429 e il deambulatorio fu completato nel 1480 e finito nel 1500. Nel 1519, la navata trasversale sud fu ampliata. Nel 1878, la chiesa fu completamente distrutta da un fulmine. Come sostituto della chiesa danneggiata, fu costruita l'attuale Grote Kerk dal 1881 al 1883.
La Grote Kerk fu chiusa nel 1968 a causa delle funzioni religiose e venduta nel 1984 per trasformarla in negozi e appartamenti. I negozi sono ormai chiusi e sono stati costruiti un ristorante e un hotel.
