Entourée de cafés, bars et restaurants, cette place vivante tenait probablement déjà lieu de Forum à l’époque romaine et reste encore aujourd’hui une place incontournable de la ville. C’est à l’église Saint Jacques construite au 12e siècle, mais rasée au 16e siècle en raison de sa proximité jugée dangereuse pour la Citadelle nouvellement construite, que la place doit son nom actuel. Au moment des Marchés de Noël, les chalets en bois remplacent les habituelles terrasses de la place et les arômes de vin chaud s’y diffusent dans les airs.
