De straatnamen Brandhoutkaai, Baksteenkaai en verderop Steenkoolkaai, Schuitenkaai… verwijzen naar de oude Brusselse binnenhaven. Na het dempen van dit Koopliedendok, stond hier van 1885 tot 1955 een grote overdekte vismarkt. Vandaar dat dit plein in de volksmond nog steeds ‘de Vismet’ heet. De restaurants met neonkreeften en de bassins met waterspuwers zijn een knipoog naar het verdwenen verleden.
Deze buurt leefde de voorbije jaren helemaal op, met talloze caféetjes, restaurants, een biosupermarkt en chocolatiers. Voor de heel populaire ijsjes van Gaston moet je nog even doorstappen tot aan de Anspachfontein. Bij mooi weer staat er een lange file, maar geduld wordt beloond!
Onder het plein bevindt zich de metrohalte Sint-Katelijne, op twee haltes van het Centraal Station. Te voet is dat een kwartiertje doorstappen.
