En of Duitsland een bierland is, of beter: was! In de donkere middeleeuwen had het stadje Einbeck maar liefst 700 (zevenhonderd) brouwerijen op zijn kleine grondgebied. Dat is nauwelijks te geloven, temeer omdat er slechts eentje van overgebleven is. Het beroemde Ainpockisch Bier, zoals het werd genoemd, zorgde zelfs tot in München voor bier en plezier' en de hertogen van Beieren lieten al vanaf 1533 het goudgele Einbeckbier rijkelijk vloeien. Einbeck was een welvarende Hanzestad. Later zou dit bier het bekende Bockbier worden. Het bier werd destijds thuis bij de mensen gebrouwen, wat verklaart waarom er zoveel kleine brouwerijtjes waren. Der beste Trank, den einer kennt, der wird Einbecker Bier genennt,' zo klonk het in de mond van Martin Luther op de Rijksdag in Worms in het jaar 1521.
