Het is vernoemd naar Manuel Prudencio de Molviedro. architect die in opdracht van de assistent van Sevilla, markies van Montereal, in de 18e eeuw de oude Mancebía in het gebied van de lagune transformeerde.
Sinds de middeleeuwen heet het Plaza de la Laguna de la Mancebía. In 1848 werd het Plaza de Molviedro genoemd en vandaag de dag heet het nog steeds zo.
Op heden (2024) is Plaza de Molviedro een woonwijk zonder bewoners, een hotel wordt eigenaar van de gebouwen.
