De Porte des Allemands, een echt klein fort op zich, is zeer symbolisch voor de stad en dankt zijn naam aan de Teutoonse ridders of Hospitaalridders van de Notre Dame des Allemands, die in de 13e eeuw een ziekenhuis stichtten in de buurt. Het is het meest indrukwekkende gebouw dat is overgebleven van de middeleeuwse stadswallen, zowel een dubbele poort als een brug over de Seille. Vanaf de Porte des Allemands kun je de rondleiding over de vestingmuren volgen, die de overblijfselen van de vestingwerken van de stad Metz laat zien.
