4000 jaar geleden verwelkomde Bure zijn eerste inwoners. Het was echter vooral vanaf de 1e eeuw v.C. dat Bure werd georganiseerd als een verschanst kamp, beschut achter muren. Er werden hutten en gebedshuizen gebouwd en ambachtelijke activiteiten vulden de landbouw- en herderseconomie aan. Opgravingen die tussen 1964 en 1986 plaatsvonden, hebben het belang en de rijkdom van het kamp, de tweede grootste archeologische vindplaats van het departement Vogezen, aangetoond. De overblijfselen worden bewaard in het Pierre-Noël Museum.
