Sainte-Ménehould is een schilderachtig en gastvrij stadje. De stad, die vroeger Château sur Aisne heette, dankt haar naam aan Manehildis die zich in de 5e eeuw onderscheidde door haar goedheid.
Dom Pérignon werd hier in 1639 geboren. Louis XVI passeerde op 21 juni 1791. De stad werd in 1719 volledig door brand verwoest en vanaf 1728 herbouwd in een 18e eeuws architectonisch ensemble.
In de buurt zijn de sites van Argonne die getuigen van de Eerste Wereldoorlog en de historische site van de Slag bij Valmy niet te missen.
