Lauw maakte deel uit van de abdij van Masevaux, die er een zagerij had.
Lauw was een grensdorp van 1870 tot 1914 en van 1940 tot 1944 en had een douanekantoor dat de wegen naar Belfort controleerde.
In 1907 richtten Amerikaanse troepen een veldhospitaal op in de oude kalksteengroeves. Voordat Lauw op 26 november 1944 werd bevrijd, werd het getroffen door artillerievuur.
Het dorp ligt op een breukzone die primaire en secundaire rotsen scheidt en heeft een interessante ondergrond.
