Standbeeld onthuld op 11 september 1865 ter ere van Ewdard JENNER, de ontdekker van het pokkenvaccin, die tijdens de Franse Revolutie door Dr William WOODVILLE naar Frankrijk werd teruggebracht.
Nadat het standbeeld in 1857 werd besteld door de Société des Sciences Industrielles in Parijs wordt het in 1858 tentoongesteld in de Cour Carrée van het Louvre, daarna op de binnenplaats van de Parijse Medische School. In 1865 werd het ingehuldigd. De stad betaalde de sokkel.
In 1907 werd het monument verplaatst naar de Prins Albertlaan, onder de stadswallen. 1942: het standbeeld zou gesmolten worden in de oorlog , maar ontsnapte omdat het van een geverfde legering was gemaakt. De huidige herschildering is recent. Brochon was in die tijd een producent van gietijzer (fabriek van Donjeux in Haute-Marne). Het standbeeld zou van gietijzer gemaakt kunnen zijn.
