Ouddorp is in de eerste plaats een geliefde badplaats met een breed en lang strand gelegen in een fraai duingebied.
Mogelijk is het dorp reeds in het jaar 900 ontstaan. Daarmee is Ouddorp ruimschoots het oudste dorp van Goeree-Overflakkee. De dorpskerk is gewijd aan Sint-Maarten. In 1418 vindt een plundering en brandstichting door hertog Jan van Brabant tijdens de Hoekse en Kabeljauwse twisten plaats, en in 1490 door Jonker Frans van Brederode en Heer Jan van Naaldwijk. Rond 1594 is er in Ouddorp sprake van een 'Nederduitsch hervormde gemeente'. Vandaag de dag telt het dorp zes kerkgenootschappen.
Ouddorp is lange tijd een erg besloten gemeenschap geweest. Het Goerees dialect (gesproken in Ouddorp en Goedereede) staat erg ver af van het Hollands en is voluit Zeeuws. Het aandeel dialectsprekers in Ouddorp is zeer hoog (het hoogste van heel Goeree-Overflakkee),
