Paesens, ontstaan in de 11e eeuw, groeide uit tot een vissersplaats. Vanaf de 16e eeuw kwam het dorp door aanslibbing steeds verder van de zee te liggen en in de 18e eeuw ontstond westelijk van Paesens het tweelingdorp Moddergat. Daar konden de vissersschepen makkelijker op de rede voor anker gaan. De inwoners van beide dorpen vormden samen één vissersvloot.
Paesens en Moddergat zijn bekend om hun visserijverleden, met name vanwege de vissersramp in 1883. Tijdens een zware voorjaarsstorm vergingen 17 schepen en kwamen 83 dorpelingen om.
