Die Marmeladenfabrik 'De Betuwe' suchte 1935 nach neuen Werbemöglichkeiten für ihre Produkte. So wurde das Männchen mit einem dicken Himbeerleib und Armen und Beinen aus roten Beeren erfunden. An dem Geburtsort von Flipje, an der Grotebrugse Grintweg, wo sich der Fabrikkomplex der Marmeladenfabrik 'De Betuwe' befand, steht jetzt ein komplettes Wohngebiet. Die Figur von Flipje wurde von der Utrechter Bildhauerin Else Rignalda geschaffen und 1993 enthüllt. Flipje trägt bei besonderen Veranstaltungen andere Kleider. Das Figur hat mittlerweile bereits verschiedene Kostüme.
