Le barrage de San Ponç a été construit entre 1949 et 1957.
Il est situé dans la vallée moyenne de la rivière Cardener, dans la comarca de Solsonés, à la limite avec le Bages, dans la province de Lérida, en Catalogne. Il fait partie de l'ensemble des barrages du bassin de la rivière Llobregat.
On a profité de la dépression formée par le Cardener à l'emplacement de l'ermitage de San Ponç pour la construction du réservoir sur des plateformes structurelles profondément entaillées par les cours d'eau. Il est enclavé dans un beau paysage de pinède avec une excellente vue au nord de la chaîne de montagne du Cadí.
