The lighthouse was built in 1886 to guide fishermen safely into the Minho estuary.
The light stands atop a 17th-century bastioned fortress that also housed a Franciscan monastery – an extremely rare combination in Portugal (the only other example is the Berlengas Fortress).
The original light (1886) was a fixed, white oil lamp on an iron frame; in 1947 the current metal tower was installed and in 1995 it was converted to solar power.
It has a natural freshwater spring – one of only three in the world to be found on a sea fort. The well allowed for long-term habitation by monks and later lighthouse keepers.
