Il corniolo rosso (Cornus sanguinea) è facilmente riconoscibile per i rami rossi. Il cespuglio fiorisce in primavera con fiori bianchi, a settembre seguono bacche di un rosso scuro. Le bacche del corniolo rosso sono molto apprezzate dagli uccelli ma non sono commestibili per l'uomo.
Esiste anche il corniolo giallo. Queste bacche sono commestibili, da cui si possono fare deliziose sciroppi e marmellate. Fai quindi attenzione a non confondere i due cornioli: il corniolo rosso prende il nome dai rami rossi, il corniolo giallo (con i suoi frutti rossi) prende il nome dai suoi fiori gialli.
