Beaumont, located in the valley of the Hantes, is the place where Napoleon stayed the night before the Battle of Waterloo.
Beaumont is situated on a 70 m high hill above the Hantes. The town was defended by an impressive wall with about 30 towers. The most important remnant of this is the 12th-century Salamander Tower.
The place is also known for its festivities which take place every 5 years on the first Sunday of October. During this time, the legend of Emperor Charles and the three market vendors is commemorated. When the Emperor went for a ride, he was unseated by three market vendors who did not realize who he was. After returning on foot, he had them hanged in the central square.
Beaumont is also known for its macarons.
