Den sorte elm (Alnus glutinosa) vokser godt på ret våde steder. Bladet er omvendt æggeformet, skinnende og mørkegrønt. Frugterne kaldes elmekoner og hænger hele vinteren på træet.
Træet blev brugt til at lave bropæle og sluseporte, da det er stærkt og holder længe under vand. Af bladene, frugterne og barken lavede man maling.
