In the past, a canal ran freely through the city and followed the course of the first fortifications.
From 1720-1725 this canal was vaulted over more than one kilometre to gain space. The lower garden is the last part of the canal that was covered. The gardeners of Hoymille moored here with their barges , hence the name "beautiful gardener" for this garden passage.
