En la frontera entre Lo-Reninge, Houthulst y Diksmuide se construyó en el siglo XVI una fortaleza por los españoles, "Fort de Knocke". Esta fortificación debía proteger la llanura de IJzervlakte de ataques de los reformistas desde Ostende.
En los siglos XVII y XVIII, la fortaleza fue adaptada y ampliada por los franceses y los austriacos, a raíz de las guerras franco-españolas-austriacas. Así, fue remodelada, entre otros, por Vauban, conocido por sus 'fortificaciones' por encargo del Rey Sol Luis XIV. Bajo el emperador José II, la fortaleza fue demolida (a partir de 1781).
El puente de Knocke se encuentra en el límite norte de esta antigua fortaleza. Es un puente levadizo sobre el IJzer, a la altura del canal Ieperleekanaal (que conecta el IJzer con Ypres).
