Die Mutter Maas (oder Meuse auf Französisch) entspringt in Frankreich bei Pouilly-en-Bassigny auf dem Plateau von Langres. Der Fluss durchquert die französischen Ardennen und Lothringen in nördlicher Richtung und passiert die Städte Verdun und Sedan, ab wo er schiffbar ist. In Givet, südlich von Dinant, überquert er die Grenze zu Belgien. Die Maas biegt in Namur (Mündung mit der Sambre) nach Osten ab und erreicht über Andenne und Huy (Huy) die größte städtische Konzentration an ihrem Lauf: Lüttich und Umgebung. Jenseits dieses Industriegebiets biegt die Maas nach Norden ab, um bei Visé die niederländische Grenze zu erreichen.
