I 1885 blev den belgiske arbejderparti grundlagt her i Zwaan. Mindetavler minder om disse historiske begivenheder. Deres vigtigste kampunkt var den almindelige stemmeret for mænd. Den for kvinder kom meget senere. Pasal Verbeken omtaler i sin bog Brutopia et interessant tal, der klart viser magtkampen knyttet til den stemmeret for mænd. "Af de seks millioner belgere måtte 5.900.000 ikke stemme."
