En 1885, le Parti ouvrier belge a été fondé ici, dans le Zwaan. Des plaques commémoratives rappellent ces événements historiques. Leur point de lutte le plus important était le suffrage universel masculin. Celui pour les femmes est arrivé beaucoup plus tard. Pasal Verbeken mentionne dans son livre Brutopia un chiffre intéressant qui illustre clairement l'ordre de la lutte de pouvoir lié à ce droit de vote pour les hommes. "Sur six millions de Belges, 5.900.000 n'étaient pas autorisés à voter."
