In 1885, the Belgian Workers' Party was founded here in the Zwaan. Commemorative plaques remind us of these historical events. Their most important struggle was for universal suffrage for men. That for women came much later. Pasal Verbeken presents an interesting figure in his book Brutopia that clearly reflects the order of the power struggle linked to that suffrage for men. "Of the six million Belgians, 5,900,000 were not allowed to vote."
