In 1885 werd hier in de Zwaan de Belgische Werkliedenpartij opgericht. Gedenkplaten herinneren aan deze historische gebeurtenissen. Hun belangrijskte strijdpunt was het algmeen stemrecht voor mannen. Dat voor vrouwen kwam veel later. Pasal Verbeken heft in zijn boek Brutopia een interessant cijfer dat de orde van de machtstrijd duidelijk weergeeft gelink aan dat stemrecht voor mannen. "Van de zes miljoen Belgen mochten 5.900.000 niet gaan stemmen."
