Nel 1885 qui nello Zwaan fu fondata il Partito dei Lavoratori Belgi. Le targhe commemorative ricordano questi eventi storici. Il loro punto di battaglia più importante era il diritto di voto universale per gli uomini. Quello per le donne arrivò molto dopo. Pasal Verbeken nel suo libro Brutopia cita un numero interessante che chiarisce l'ordine della lotta per il potere legato a quel diritto di voto per gli uomini. "Dei sei milioni di belgi, 5.900.000 non potevano votare."
