Im Jahr 1885 wurde hier im Zwaan die Belgische Arbeiterpartei gegründet. Gedenktafel erinnern an diese historischen Ereignisse. Ihr wichtigstes Streitpunkt war das allgemeine Wahlrecht für Männer. Das für Frauen kam viel später. Pasal Verbeken führt in seinem Buch Brutopia eine interessante Zahl an, die die Ordnung des Machtkampfes deutlich im Zusammenhang mit diesem Wahlrecht für Männer wiedergibt. "Von den sechs Millionen Belgiern durften 5.900.000 nicht wählen."
