Joos Vijd wuchs als Jugendlicher auf der Burg Singelberg, wo sein Vater Clais als Burgherr die Burg im Namen von Graf Lodewijk von Male und Herzog Philipp dem Kühnen, Herren von Beveren, verwaltete.
Von der Burg Singelberg aus konnte die Familie Vijd den Handelsverkehr auf der Schelde kontrollieren. Die Burg dominierte die Umgebung und war daher entscheidend in allen großen militärischen Konflikten, die sich zwischen dem 14. und 16. Jahrhundert abspielten. Die Burg Singelberg war auch der Schauplatz der Übergabe Antwerpen an den italienischen Statthalter Alexander Farnese (1585, Frieden von Antwerpen). 1652 wurde die stark verfallene Burg abgerissen. Heute bleibt nur noch der Mottehügel, auf dem einst die imposante Burg stand.
