Der Wasserturm wurde 1788 (Datum genannt) Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts (Jahr IV) auf der Festungsmauer erbaut und von einem Gebäude gekrönt, das für das Büro des Oberingenieurs vorgesehen war.
Fontaine Louis XVI wird auch Fontaine de la Chefferie genannt.
Der Maschinenraum wurde später in Gemeinschaftsräume umgewandelt. Zwischen 1844 und 1865 wurde auf der anderen Seite der Treppe ein ähnliches Gebäude mit Stallungen, einem Böschungsschuppen und einem Böschungsbüro errichtet. Die Ufergebäude wurden im Krieg 1939–1945 beschädigt. Die Überreste wurden 1958 zerstört. Dekoriert vom Bildhauer Antoine Harrewyn, bekannt als Beau Soleil.
