The Land of Gaum is a (beautiful) part of Belgian Lorraine and was, until 170 million years ago, the bottom of a sea inhabited by enormous reptiles. This bottom consisted of sediment layers of different composition: marl, schist, clay, limestone, and sandstone. After the seabed rose, it was obviously cut and eroded by rivers such as the Semois, the Vire, and the Ton. This way, three hills or cuesta ridges were formed in the Land of Gaum. A cuesta is essentially a hill with a steep flank and a gentle slope. In the Land of Gaum, the steep flank faces north, while the gentle slope faces south.
