Postel is best known for its Norbertine abbey. From 1138 to 1613 this abbey was a priory belonging to the Abbey of Floreffe. It then became an independent abbey. In French times the abbey was closed. From 1797 the complex was privately owned for several decades, until in 1847 it was decided to return it to the monastics. In that year the Norbertines returned.
The abbey church dates from the 12th century and was originally built in Romanesque style with some later Gothic additions. The tower is built in Baroque style. Guided tours are organised in the abbey. In addition, there are walks set out. This abbey has also been known since 1994 for the new herb garden, where ginseng is grown, among other things. Various abbey products are sold in a shop. The Postel abbey beer is brewed by a commercial brewer in Opwijk.
After all, Postel has been known since 1960 for the beer of the same name, which is brewed in Opwijk. From 1611 to about 1943, beer was brewed intermittently in the abbey for its own use. A cheese is also named after Postel.
