The most famous inhabitant of Tongeren is undoubtedly Ambiorix, king of the Eburones. We owe it to him that Julius Caesar called the Belgians the 'bravest of all Gauls'. Yes, Caesar received a serious knock from the Belgae, but the Roman superiority eventually proved too great. Ambiorix was able to flee, read: he disappeared without a trace. Even to the extent that historians doubt whether he really existed. Despite the scepticism, Ambiorix was given a statue in 1866.
