In the 1580s, the army of the Spanish king reconquered the rebel Southern Netherlands. However, a few cities continued to resist. Of those recalcitrant enclaves, Ostend was the most notorious. From the coastal town, privateers and groups of soldiers ventured deep into the Flemish inland to plunder and impose monthly assessments, the so-called 'contributions', on the villages. Ostend quickly earned the reputation of being a notorious 'canker'.
