Conscience Square no. 7/ Boeiaardstraat. Shop called "MOSTAARD WOSTYN" cf. painted inscription (black letters on a white background). Corner building from around 1879 according to the land registry, expanded in 1901 with a warehouse. The business dates back to 1869 when the Wostyn brothers submitted an application for a steam engine to power the 'mustard mills', in the now disappeared Prison Street (current Markt no. 25). In 1900, a diesel engine was added. In 1927, the business moved to the buildings Conscience Square no. 7 (shop) and Boeiaardstraat no. 1 (business, now converted into residential units). In 1934, larger and new mills were installed to meet the growing demand, as "Mostaard Wostyn" had grown into one of the most important mustard makers in West Flanders. From 1974 to 1995, the company was in the hands of Jef Duflou, after which Piet Wostyn took over the business again. The family also operates the mustard museum (industrial park, Oude Gentweg no. 63). Corner building with a marked beveled bay topped with a dormer window under a curved pediment. Brick construction with applied joints, red painted above a gray painted plinth. Well-maintained brickwork of drip moldings and wall panels, outlining the facade with a white-painted gutter board on brackets. Arched wall openings, preserved painted woodwork. On the ground floor, sliding windows; on the upper floor, windows with T-layout with transom and large bar division. Interior: old shop fittings and tools related to mustard production. Wing door with etched glass. LAND REGISTRY ARCHIVE WEST FLANDERS, 207: Mutation sketches, Torhout, 1879/40, 1901/108. MESTDAGH M., Torhout.
