The former family brewery De Smedt initially focused on the production of the spicy and fruity amber beer Op Ale. That beer immediately won four gold medals at the Brussels World Expo in 1935. In 1970, the brewery was entrusted with the production of the Affligem abbey beers. The Affligem abbey was founded in 1074 on the border of Flemish Brabant and East Flanders. For centuries, beer was brewed there, first by laypeople, and after the French Revolution by the monks themselves. With the Formula Antiqua Renovata, the authentic recipe of the Benedictine monks but with modern materials, three Affligem beers are brewed: the blond, the dubbel, and the tripel. In 2004, the Affligem tripel won the World Beer Cup in the United States as the best tripel in the world. The brewery also produces the abbey beers of Postel and the brainchild, the Op-Ale.
