Sint-Maria-Latem was a municipality that after the administrative reorganization of 1971 merged with the new entity of Zwalm. It is located in the province of East Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium. In 2001, it had 629 inhabitants. The first written mention of Laethem dates back to 820. In 1175-1176, the chapter of Kamerijk granted the patronage to the Abbey of Saint Bavo of Ghent. The village of Sint-Maria-Latem was part of the barony of Gavere, which under the reign of Charles V became a principality in the castellany of the Aalst region.
