The current castle had a predecessor, which was described in 1476 as a moat house with tenant court. This older building is still recalled by a Gothic marlstone wall niche.
In 1617 the castle and lordship were sold by Ernest Van der Mark-Arenberg to Jan-Willem van Scharenberg. He had the current castle built. In 1688 all this was sold to Pierre-Louis de Sluse de Bihain, as Baron Van Scharenberg was burdened by debts. In 1763 a renovation in classicist style by Jean Ferdinand de Sluse followed. The oldest known image of the castle was made in 1740 by Remacle Leloup.
