On the plain of Rijmenam, near Bonheiden and Keerbergen, a fierce battle was fought in 1578. Here a Spanish army fights against the State army from the Netherlands, as one of the many battles of the Eighty Years' War. Up to 1000 Spanish soldiers would have been killed here in this battle, on August 1, 1578.
